Death Benefits
Death benefits are paid to your designated beneficiary and depends on the amount of service credit.
Less than one year of service credit
- Death is not job related- Your member contributions are refunded to beneficiary.
- Death is job related- Lump sum payment of your member contributions plus one year’s salary is paid to your beneficiary.
More than one year but less than eight years of service credit
- Lump sum payment of your member contributions plus one year’s salary is paid to your beneficiary.
Eight or more years of service credit
- Lump sum payment of your member contributions plus one year’s salary is paid to your beneficiary. If you are married or in a civil union for at least one year and your spouse is your only primary beneficiary, your spouse could choose a monthly surviving spouse pension plus a $3,000 instead of lump sum
